Activities to Engage a Loved One with Limited Mobility, Speech and Eyesight

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) can greatly impact an individual’s quality of life. Engaging with loved ones who have limited mobility, speech, and eyesight can be challenging, but meaningful activities can make moments special. Here are some tailored suggestions:

1. Play their favorite tunes, nature sounds, or listen to audiobooks. The auditory senses can be a pathway to nostalgia or relaxation.

2. Use different textured materials for them to touch and feel. This could include fabrics like velvet, silk, or fleece, as well as items like beads, foam, or rice.

3. Utilize scented oils or lotions for gentle hand massages. The act of touch can be reassuring and calming.

4. Even if their eyesight is limited, the sound of a familiar or comforting story can be a joy. Choose books or poems they loved in the past.

5. Introduce them to a range of audiobooks or podcasts, from calming narratives to familiar classics.

6. Games like 'Guess the Sound' using various household items can be engaging and stimulating.

7. Use fragrant herbs, spices, or essential oils, and let them guess the scent. This can be a fun sensory game.

8. The sensation of fresh air on the skin, the sound of birds chirping, or the warmth of the sun can be therapeutic. Ensure they're comfortable and protected.

9. Sometimes, just being there, holding their hand, and speaking about the day or reminiscing about old memories can provide comfort and connection.

The key is to focus on activities that engage the senses they can use and enjoy, while ensuring their comfort and safety.
